In the newest episode of ABC' Grey's Anatomy, Amelia arrives at Seattle Grace to beg Derek for help with Erica's gliosarcoma case; Cristina and Owen engage in heated arguments during marriage counseling; Alex realizes that to be a good doctor, he'll need to improve his people skills; and Meredith is given a chance to shine when a man enters the ER after getting his hand stuck in a meat grinder.
In the start of a two hour crossover event with Private Practice, this episode laid the groundwork for the life-saving surgery of Erica in the latter show. The other primary focus of the episode followed the various residents as they took the leadership as they studied for their upcoming boards.
Amelia and Derek's relationship has also been so complex and so layered that whenever they interact it is very compelling. Her trip up to Seattle was clouded by her determination to cure Erica that it sort of watered down their interactions. They did argue over her recent drug relapse but they quickly teamed up to try and accomplish the impossible. I hoped to see Amelia have some screentime with Meredith, her sister-in-law, but she mostly worked with the other Grey, Lexie, which proved just as special to the overall episode and ending resolution.
Meredith was actually busy with a tricky case of her own in which a man got his arm stuck in a meat grinder. At the top of the episode, Richard was lurking throughout the shadows of the hospital overhearing everything and asked Callie to guide Meredith with her studying. Callie passed leadership of the case to Meredith so she could prove worthy to her. The man's arm was able to be saved but to make it more intriguing the doctors had to replace his thumb with one of his toes. The upcoming friendship between these two characters should be interesting moving forward since they are so similar in their lives at the moment and should give Callie more to do than other recent episodes.
While all of this was going on in the hospital, Owen and Cristina were battling it out at couple's therapy. Their spats had some nice allusions to their relationship - the icicle, their hasty marriage and both of their issues with PTSD. These two actors always play so well off of each other and this episode was no exception. Every argument they had eventually led back to the same thing - the abortion. It is great that all of their issues over this are coming out into the open. However, I am unsure of how they can conclude this story without it seeming out of character for either of them and that really intrigues me. Realistically I feel that they need a separation period where they can cool down and realize how much they love and need the other once again.

Side Note:
- Was it just me or was Alex more of a jackass in this episode than he has been for much of the season?
- Mark and Jackson must make the hottest bromance ever! It was also great to see Jackson get his confidence and stand up to Bailey
- Did that toe in the concluding montage look a little too fake?
