Months after the second season concluded and speculation erupted over whether the drama would continue or not, HBO has officially renewed The Newsroom from creator Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeff Daniels for a third and final season.
The renewal wait stemmed from the uncertainty of when Sorkin - who is busy with many other projects - would have the time to commerce production on new episodes of the series. The third season will see the return of Sorkin and executive producers Alan Poul and Scott Rudin with the addition of Paul Lieberstein (The Office) to the production team. Production on new episodes will begin in Spring 2014 for a Fall 2014 premiere date.
The series regular cast were locked into new starring deals at the end of the last season. The regulars include Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel and Olivia Munn.
The Newsroom is the third drama series that HBO has announced will be ending during the upcoming year. Previously, the network had announced that the forthcoming seasons of True Blood and Boardwalk Empire would be their final seasons as well.
