After a lengthy negotiating process with 20th Century Fox Television, ABC has closed a deal to bring back the Tim Allen-starring Last Man Standing for a fourth season as well as series orders for new comedies Cristela and Fresh Off the Boat.
Last Man Standing has been a reliable performer for ABC on Friday nights. Budgetary issues held up a renewal - unless it would have been picked up with all of ABC's other no-brainer decisions on Thursday night. But now a deal has been made that made both sides happy. So, we'll get another another season of Tim Allen doing vlogs and Loretta not being able to be a major presence of the final season of Justified.
Here's some series descriptions for the two newest comedies to ABC's schedule:
Cristela: In her sixth year of law school, Cristela (Cristela Alonzo) is finally on the brink of landing her first big (unpaid) internship at a prestigious law firm. The only problem is that her pursuit of success is more ambitious than her traditional Mexican-American family thinks is appropriate. She's stuck stradding the old culture she's trying to modernize at home with her working-class family and the modern world she's trying to embrace in her professional career.
The cast also includes Carlos Ponce, Terri Hoyos, Andrew Leeds and Sam McMurray.
The pilot was written by Alonzo and Kevin Hench and directed by John Pasquin. Executive producers are Kevin Hench, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Shawn Levy. 20th Century Fox Television and 21 Laps/Adelstein will produce.
Fresh Off the Boat: It's the 1990s and 12 year old, hip-hop loving Eddie (Hudson Yang) just moved to suburban Orlando from DC's Chinatown with his parents (Randall Park & Constance Wu). It's culture shock for his immigrant family in this comedy about pursuing the American Dream.
The cast also includes Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen.
Based on Chef Eddie Huang's memoir, the pilot was written by Nahnatchka Kahn. Executive producers are Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar. 20th Century Fox Television will produce.
