Today, Hallmark Channel has announced a second season renewal for When Calls the Heart, the network's second original scripted series. Based on the book series of the same name by Janette Oke, the drama series was developed by Michael Landon, Jr. Production on new episodes will begin later this year for a premiere in 2015.
When Calls the Heart tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges.
The cast includes Krakow, Daniel Lissing, Chelah Horsdal, Gracyn Shinyei, Martin Cummins and Lori Loughlin. Executive producers are Landon Jr., Brad Krevoy and Brian Bird.

Airing Saturdays at 9, the drama's premiere episode was viewed by 1.69 million viewers on January 11, 2014. The series wrapped its first season on March 29, 2014 with 1.67 million viewers.
