AMC Gives Early Season 2 Renewal to 'Better Call Saul'; Pushes Premiere to Early 2015

Breaking Bad prequel series Better Call Saul only began production on its 10 episode first season earlier this month but AMC has already handed out an early second season renewal order for the drama. Instead of premiering in November 2014, the new series will now debut in Early 2015 alongside new episodes of The Walking Dead and Talking Dead.

Breaking Bad creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan is directing the series premiere for Better Call Saul but now he has officially signed on as co-showrunner alongside fellow Breaking Bad alum Peter Gould, who created the Saul Goodman character during Breaking Bad's second season.

The first season is staying firm at 10 episodes but the second season order will be for an additional 13 episodes - bringing the series' total to 23 episodes across 2015 and 2016.

"Production on Better Call Saul is underway and we could not be more proud of or more excited about the work to date. We join the fans in eager anticipation for this series and today we happily confirm that our initial Saul order is for two seasons and a total of 23 episodes," said AMC President Charlie Collier. "When introducing any series, especially one with the DNA of Breaking Bad, there are countless factors to consider in making sure the show gets the launch it deserves. We have a strong history with Vince, Peter, Bob, the studio and so many involved with this production; we are enjoying the process on Saul and all share a focus on making it a true television event. No half measures."

Breaking Bad veterans Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks will reprise their roles as Saul Goodman and Mike Ehrmantraut, respectively, on the new drama. New cast additions include Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando.

In addition to Gilligan and Gould, the writing team also includes Thomas Schnauz, Gennifer Hutchison, Bradley Paul and Gordon Smith. Executive producers are Gilligan, Gould, Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.
