MTV Gives Straight-to-Series Order to Drama 'Shannara'

MTV has handed out a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes to an adaptation of Terry Brooks best-selling fantasy novels Shannara, it was announced today during the network's panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Al Gough and Miles Millar will pen the new series, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Jonathan Liebesman set to direct the first two episodes, taking over for Jon Favreau who had to pull out due to a scheduling conflict but remains an executive producer. Casting is expected to begin very shortly.

The Shannara novel series first started in 1977 with The Sword of Shannara and currently includes 25 books. Producers plan to base the first season on The Elfstones of Shannara, the second title to be published in the series in 1982. The story centers on the Shannara family, whose descendants are empowered with ancient magic and whose adventures continuously reshape the future of the world.
