The nominations are in for the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards. Over the next few weeks, I'll be going through several of the major categories and offer my predictions on who will win this year. Next up, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
The nominees are: Episodes' Iain B. MacDonald; Glee's Paris Barclay; Louie's Louis C.K.; Modern Family's Gail Mancuso; Orange Is the New Black's Jodie Foster; and Silicon Valley's Mike Judge.
1. JODIE FOSTER - ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (NETFLIX)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "LESBIAN REQUEST DENIED"
Foster is a movie actress coming to TV to direct an episode of the breakout hit of the awards ceremony. On top of that, "Lesbian Request Denied" is a great episode that does wonderful stuff with Sophia's backstory and in the Piper-Suzanne dynamic. How in the world will voters be able to refuse voting for her?
2. GAIL MANCUSO - MODERN FAMILY (ABC)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "LAS VEGAS"
The Modern Family directors have won in this category for the past three years in a row - with Mancuso winning just last year. "Las Vegas" was the farcical highlight of the lackluster fifth season where all the various pieces came together in a really funny way in the final act set piece. It's quite an impressive tape and very well could give Mancuso another win.
3. LOUIS C.K. - LOUIE (FX)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "ELEVATOR, PART 6"
C.K. may have been better served submitting the extended "Into the Woods" episode instead of the one where he creates a super storm and concludes the wonderful "Elevator" saga - if for no other reason than running time. I personally think "Elevator, Part 6" is a great directorial episode. I'd be happy if it won even though it has some tough competition.
4. MIKE JUDGE - SILICON VALLEY (HBO)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "MINIMUM VIABLE PRODUCT"
I'm surprised Judge went for the season premiere over the season finale for his episode submission in this category. That choice may end up hurting him here.
5. PARIS BARCLAY - GLEE (FOX)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "100"
"100" was one of two episodes of Glee I made an effort to see last season. The other one being "The Quarterback" - which if an episode of Glee was going to win anything this year it would have been that one not "100."
6. IAIN B. MACDONALD - EPISODES (SHOWTIME)
EPISODE SUBMISSION: "EPISODE NINE"
Again didn't see anything of Episodes last season. So I have no clue what actually happened in "Episode Nine." But it doesn't feel like momentum is on Episodes' side.
