Emmy Predictions 2014: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie

The nominations are in for the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards. Over the next few weeks, I'll be going through several of the major categories and offer my predictions on who will win this year. Next up, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie.

The nominees are: American Horror Story: Coven's Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates & Frances Conroy; Flowers in the Attic's Ellen Burstyn; The Normal Heart's Julia Roberts; and Fargo's Allison Tolman

1. ALLISON TOLMAN - FARGO (FX)

Tolman was one of the biggest discoveries of the past year. She was so fresh and so captivating. She more than held her own opposite established actors like Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman. She was the heart and the soul of the miniseries. She was committed to getting justice in her town while working in a system that didn't foster any kind of perseverance. When the system failed her, we all felt it and that was completely because Tolman. A true revelation.

2. JULIA ROBERTS - THE NORMAL HEART (HBO)

Roberts was never going to be the chief focus of The Normal Heart and yet it still netted her an Emmy nomination. It could also very well lead to a win! The entertainment community loves the TV movie finally being made after years of trying to get it done. It was well received and received nominations across the board. All that support could lead to Roberts walking up to that podium come Emmy night.

3. KATHY BATES - AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN (FX)

Half of this category comes from the latest installment of the American Horror Story franchise. That shows support amongst the voters. Bates has an established history with the Emmys. She seems well poised out of the AHS co-stars to win in this field. She's only won one Emmy in her long career - for Two and a Half Men of all things! Doesn't she deserve more than that? Plus her character was pretty funny as she underwent a culture shock.

4. ANGELA BASSETT - AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN (FX)

However, Bassett had the much flashier role of the supporting turns on American Horror Story this year. If someone from that show won here, she would be the one I would vote for. But I don't see that happening. I'm not ruling it out. It's just the Top 3 have much stronger odds.

5. ELLEN BURSTYN - FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC (LIFETIME)

Burstyn won just a year ago for her turn on USA's Political Animals. That was a surprise win in a night full of them. The same very well could happen again this year. She was often the best part of the Lifetime movie adaptation of the hit novel. I definitely think there's more deserving winners in this field but you can't count out Burstyn.

6. FRANCES CONROY - AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN (FX)

This was a creatively poor season for American Horror Story. And yet, it still got three women into this category. Bates and Bassett simply had flashier things to do than Conroy. It's great she got nominated but I'm not predicting a win. It would be one of the bigger and more surprising upsets if it happened.
