Emmy Predictions 2014: Outstanding TV Movie

The nominations are in for the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards. Over the next few weeks, I'll be going through several of the major categories and offer my predictions on who will win this year. Next up, Outstanding Television Movie.

The nominees are: National Geographic's Killing Kennedy; HBO's Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight; HBO's The Normal Heart; PBS' Sherlock: His Last Vow; and Lifetime's The Trip to Bountiful.

1. THE NORMAL HEART (HBO)

This category feels like one of the very few locks for the night. I just don't see a circumstance where The Normal Heart loses in this field. It's got the backing of HBO - which has won in this category for the past decade. It has an A-list cast. It was one of the most nominated programs of the year. On top of all of it, it just has such a rich history of finally being made and telling such a powerful story.

2. SHERLOCK: HIS LAST VOW (PBS)

If anything is going to upset The Normal Heart for a win, it's going to be the latest installment of Sherlock. Sure, I think it's a little unfair the program gets to submit one of their 3 episodes each year as a movie. But this is the category it has been shoehorned in. It walked away with a ton of technical Emmys last weekend. While that doesn't have a lot of merit in Emmy history, it does show support in the various fields.

3. THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL (LIFETIME)

Long-shot candidate that is more likely to be rewarded for Cicely Tyson's performance.

4. MUHAMMAD ALI'S GREATEST FIGHT (HBO)

If a movie from HBO is going to win, it's going to be The Normal Heart.

5. KILLING KENNEDY (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC)

This movie simply wasn't that good. If it won, I expect nearly everyone to be upset about it - myself included.
