FX Cancels 'The Comedians' After One Season

FX has opted not to order any more episodes of comedy series The Comedians, it was announced today by showrunner Ben Wesler on Twitter. The series aired its last episode on June 25.

On Twitter, Wesler wrote, "#TheComedians is cancelled at FX. I could not be more proud of the work we all did."

The comedy was an adaptation of a Swedish series and featured Billy Crystal and Josh Gad playing heightened versions of themselves as they developed a sketch comedy series at FX.

The cast also included Stephnie Weir, Matt Oberg and Megan Ferguson. Crystal, Wesler, Matt Nix and Larry Charles developed the series. FX Productions and Fox 21 produced.

Despite its star power, the series only opened to 878,000 viewers in its series premiere on April 9 and fell to only 306,000 same-day viewers for its series finale.

It's likely the network waited to see how well the comedy - which received mixed reviews overall - did with Emmy nominations last week. The show only garnered 2 noms - for guest actor Mel Brooks and original song "Kiss An Old Man" penned by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
