CBS has opted to conclude its original drama series Under the Dome, it was announced this afternoon. The news comes as the series has hit series low numbers this summer. Its final episode will air on September 10.
The network promises that the finale brings closure to the storyline about the mysterious dome that's kept the occupants of a small Maine town separated from the rest of the world.
Per CBS, "In the series finale, when the Dome comes down, many questions about its origin and power will be answered, as two groups of residents engage in one final conflict that some won't survive."
The series was developed by Brian K. Vaughan and based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. Executive producers include Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Jack Bender, Stacey Snider and Steven Spielberg. CBS Television Studios and Amblin Television produced.
The cast for the third season includes Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, Aisha Hinds, Mackenzie Lintz, Eddie Cahill, Kylie Bunbury and Dean Norris.
"Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," said Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment Chairman. "Dome's event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo. We're excited to present the final chapter in Chester's Mill as the story comes full circle, with the dome coming down as dramatically as it went up."
