Netflix has given a 13-episode, straight-to-series order to 13 Reasons Why based on the best-selling young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher. Singer-actress Selena Gomez will executive produce the miniseries adaptation.
Pulitzer Prize and Tony winner Brian Yorkey will write the first episode, as well as executive produce with Mandy Teefey and Kristel Laiblin. Anonymous Content will produce.
The series centers on a shy California high school student who finds a box of cassette tapes on his doorstep. The tapes were recorded by Hanna Barker, a classmate he had feelings for who committed suicide. The tapes are sent with instructions to pass them on to a list of students like a chain letter, and the tapes explain to 13 people how they played a role in her death.
It's currently unclear if Gomez will have a starring role in the project as well.
