HBO has given a straight-to-series order to drama Sharp Objects based on the best-selling book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. Oscar nominee Amy Adams (The Fighter, The Master) has signed on to play the lead role. The order is for 8 episodes.
Sharp Objects centers on reporter Camille Preaker (Adams) - fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital - who faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille hardly has spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows, a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.
Marti Noxon (UnREAL, Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce) is writing the drama and will serve as showrunner. Flynn has also signed on as an executive producer and will write multiple episodes. Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club) is set to direct and executive produce. Additional executive producers include Jason Blum, Charles Layton, Jessica Rhoades and Nathan Ross. Blumhouse Productions and Entertainment One will produce.
