Starz has renewed its original limited series The Girlfriend Experience for a second season. The anthology drama will produce 14 episodes for its second season and focus on new characters and stories.
Inspired by the film of the same name, The Girlfriend Experience explores the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. These purveyors - or GFEs (girlfriend experience) - share intimacies more common to actual romantic partners, becoming quasi-lovers and confidants who are richly compensated for their time and skill.
The first season starred Riley Keough and averaged 238,000 total viewers across 13 episodes. However, the entire season was released via Starz On Demand following its series premiere.
Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz will continue to serve as showrunners, writers, directors and executive producers in the second season. Additional executive producers include Steven Soderbergh, Philip Fleishman, Jeff Cuban, Andrew Fierberg and Adele Romanski.
"The first season of The Girlfriend Experience allowed us to accommodate all viewing appetites with the traditional weekly episodic premiere schedule as well as a binging option for the entire 13-episodes," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz.
