Netflix has ordered eight episodes of original comedy series Atypical starring Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Keir Gilchrist (United States of Tara) and Michael Rapaport (Justified). Production will begin later this year in Los Angeles.
The series is described as a coming-of-age story that follows Sam (Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum and his search for love and independence. His funny yet painful journey of self-discovery upends his entire family and forces them all to grapple with change in their own lives as they struggle with what it means to be normal. Leigh and Rapaport will play Sam's parents, Elsa and Doug.
The cast will also include Brigette Lundy-Paine (The Glass Castle) as Sam's sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda (How to Get Away With Murder) as Sam's therapist, Julia.
Robia Rashid (The Goldbergs, How I Met Your Mother) created the comedy. Seth Gordon has come aboard to direct the first episode. Rashid and Gordon will executive produce with Mary Rohlich. Leigh will be credited as a producer. Sony Pictures Television is producing.
