From June 12 to June 26, voting is taking place for The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. To add to the excitement of the past year in television, I'm providing analysis on which shows and performers are likely to get nominated this year. Next up is Comedy Series.
2016 Nominees:
ABC's black-ish
Netflix's Master of None
ABC's Modern Family
HBO's Silicon Valley
Amazon's Transparent
Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
HBO's Veep (WINNER)
Netflix's Master of None
ABC's Modern Family
HBO's Silicon Valley
Amazon's Transparent
Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
HBO's Veep (WINNER)
Comedy has become such an engaging and inventive genre over the past few years. There are so many different types of shows that now fit under this classification. Seven nomination slots is barely enough to recognize all of the innovation. And yet, that's all the Emmys will choose to recognize. All of last year's nominees are once again eligible. However, one of them is destined to fall off to make room for critical darling Atlanta. I truly believe that this will be the year that Modern Family falls off the Emmy ballot. It's a five time winner in this category. But the buzz is just no longer there. It's no longer getting the nominations elsewhere on the ballot. It seems vulnerable. But then again, I could also make the argument for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt being vulnerable as well. I think only one past nominee will fall off. But there are also more new shows than just Atlanta that would deserve a nomination too. So, a big shakeup could happen as well.
So now, here's my thoughts on the programs most likely to be nominated for Comedy Series:
