How Well Did I Do Predicting the 2017 Emmy Nominations?

Over the last month, I've been posting my predictions for which performers and shows were most likely to get nominated for Emmys this year. This morning, the official nominees were announced. So now, I'm comparing the two lists to see just how close I actually was this year. Enjoy!

My Predictions for Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
Sterling K. Brown for NBC's This Is Us
        Anthony Hopkins for HBO's Westworld
Rami Malek for USA's Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk for AMC's Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys for FX's The Americans
Kevin Spacey for Netflix's House of Cards

Actual Nominees for Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Sterling K. Brown for NBC's This Is Us
        Anthony Hopkins for HBO's Westworld
Bob Odenkirk for AMC's Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys for FX's The Americans
Liev Schreiber for Showtime's Ray Donovan
Kevin Spacey for Netflix's House of Cards
Milo Ventimiglia for NBC's This Is Us

5/7. It is truly strange to see Rami Malek snubbed this year especially after he won a year ago. Voters typically don't drop winners like that. That confirms that buzz really did die down on Mr. Robot in Season 2. Meanwhile, voters still like Liev Schreiber and proved to be much more receptive to the actors on This Is Us than I was expecting.

My Predictions for Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Viola Davis for ABC's How to Get Away With Murder
Claire Foy for Netflix's The Crown
Elisabeth Moss for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Keri Russell for FX's The Americans
Evan Rachel Wood for HBO's Westworld
Robin Wright for Netflix's House of Cards

Actual Nominees for Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Viola Davis for ABC's How to Get Away With Murder
Claire Foy for Netflix's The Crown
Elisabeth Moss for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Keri Russell for FX's The Americans
Evan Rachel Wood for HBO's Westworld
Robin Wright for Netflix's House of Cards

6/6. I got them all right. That's amazing and only rarely happens. There is usually a surprise nomination that I'm not expecting. This is a solid group of contenders as well. I'm eagerly anticipating a fight between Moss and Foy for the trophy too.

My Predictions for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Jonathan Banks for AMC's Better Call Saul
        Ed Harris for HBO's Westworld
Ron Cephas Jones for NBC's This Is Us
Michael Kelly for Netflix's House of Cards
John Lithgow for Netflix's The Crown
        Jeffrey Wright for HBO's Westworld

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Jonathan Banks for AMC's Better Call Saul
David Harbour for Netflix's Stranger Things
Ron Cephas Jones for NBC's This Is Us
Michael Kelly for Netflix's House of Cards
John Lithgow for Netflix's The Crown
        Mandy Patinkin for Showtime's Homeland
        Jeffrey Wright for HBO's Westworld

5/7. I truly didn't know how much voters would embrace Stranger Things because the supernatural genre hasn't done well in the history of the awards. But it's a delightful surprise to see Harbour make this list. I'm not too disappointed about Ed Harris not getting in either. The actors of Westworld did well elsewhere.

My Predictions for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Uzo Aduba for Netflix's Orange Is the New Black
Millie Bobby Brown for Netflix's Stranger Things
Margo Martindale for FX's The Americans
        Thandie Newton for HBO's Westworld
Rhea Seehorn for AMC's Better Call Saul
Maura Tierney for Showtime's The Affair

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Uzo Aduba for Netflix's Orange Is the New Black
Millie Bobby Brown for Netflix's Stranger Things
Ann Dowd for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Chrissy Metz for NBC's This Is Us
        Thandie Newton for HBO's Westworld
Samira Wiley for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale

3/6. Only half right with this one. This category was one of the harder ones to guess because of the incredible amount of turnover from Game of Thrones not being eligible. Metz, Wiley and Dowd are all deserving nominees as well - though I kinda wish Wiley's nomination was for her final season on Orange Is the New Black.

My Predictions for Guest Actor in a Drama Series:
Hank Azaria for Showtime's Ray Donovan
Dylan Baker for CBS All Access' The Good Fight
Gerald McRaney for NBC's This Is Us
        Ben Mendelsohn for Netflix's Bloodline
Lars Mikkelsen for Netflix's House of Cards
BD Wong for USA's Mr. Robot

Actual Nominees for Guest Actor in a Drama Series:
Hank Azaria for Showtime's Ray Donovan
Brian Tyree Henry for NBC's This Is Us
Gerald McRaney for NBC's Thus Is Us
        Ben Mendelsohn for Netflix's Bloodline
Denis O'Hare for NBC's This Is Us
BD Wong for USA's Mr. Robot

4/6. This category proves that voters really loved This Is Us. That will make it a serious contender for all the awards. Meanwhile, it is also abundantly clear that voters haven't seen The Good Fight yet despite The Good Wife being a perennial favorite.

My Predictions for Guest Actress in a Drama Series:
Alexis Bledel for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Laverne Cox for Netflix's Orange Is the New Black
Kim Dickens for Netflix's House of Cards
Carrie Preston for CBS All Access' The Good Fight
Cicely Tyson for ABC's How to Get Away With Murder
Alison Wright for FX's The Americans

Actual Nominees for Guest Actress in a Drama Series:
Alexis Bledel for Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Laverne Cox for Netflix's Orange Is the New Black
Ann Dowd for HBO's The Leftovers
Shannon Purser for Netflix's Stranger Things
Cicely Tyson for ABC's How to Get Away With Murder
Alison Wright for FX's The Americans

4/6. On the one hand, I'm glad that The Leftovers got an Emmy nomination somewhere. Dowd is completely deserving too. But I wanted so much more for one of the best dramas of the modern era. Moreover, this category is further proof that we shouldn't take these awards too seriously. Purser did absolutely nothing to deserve this nomination. There was no reason for her character to go viral the way she did. It's laughable that she's included here.

My Predictions for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
        Anthony Anderson for ABC's Black-ish
Aziz Ansari for Netflix's Master of None
Ted Danson for NBC's The Good Place
        Donald Glover for FX's Atlanta
Thomas Middleditch for HBO's Silicon Valley
        Jeffrey Tambor for Amazon's Transparent

Actual Nominees for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
        Anthony Anderson for ABC's Black-ish
Aziz Ansari for Netflix's Master of None
        Zach Galifianakis for FX's Baskets
        Donald Glover for FX's Atlanta
William H. Macy for Showtime's Shameless
        Jeffrey Tambor for Amazon's Transparent

4/6. I guess Macy is sticking in this category for as long as Shameless is on the air. He's good on that show. I just would have given it to someone else. But Galifianakis' inclusion was a surprise that is deserving too. The more support for Baskets the better. It deserves more love.

My Predictions for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Pamela Adlon for FX's Better Things
        Allison Janney for CBS' Mom
Ellie Kemper for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        Julia Louis-Dreyfus for HBO's Veep
        Issa Rae for HBO's Insecure
Tracee Ellis Ross for ABC's Black-ish

Actual Nominees for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Pamela Adlon for FX's Better Things
Jane Fonda for Netflix's Grace and Frankie
        Allison Janney for CBS' Mom
Ellie Kemper for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        Julia Louis-Dreyfus for HBO's Veep
Tracee Ellis Ross for ABC's Black-ish
Lily Tomlin for Netflix's Grace and Frankie

5/7. A category switch didn't affect Janney's chances of getting nominated at all. That wasn't particularly surprising. Both Fonda and Tomlin getting in for the first time though is. They seem to be the only parts of that show that the voters are aware of though. That's weird - but with seven nominees it doesn't feel like they kicked out someone more deserving.

My Predictions for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
        Louie Anderson for FX's Baskets
Alec Baldwin for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Andre Braugher for FOX's Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Tituss Burgess for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        Tony Hale for HBO's Veep
Brian Tyree Henry for FX's Atlanta

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
        Louie Anderson for FX's Baskets
Alec Baldwin for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Tituss Burgess for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Ty Burrell for ABC's Modern Family
        Tony Hale for HBO's Veep
        Matt Walsh for HBO's Veep

4/6. I would not have thought that Burrell would stick around longer in this category than Braugher. I'm also still surprised that Walsh gets in over his co-star Timothy Simons. But then again, these shows are packed with deserving talent and not all can get included in these nominations.

My Predictions for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
        Anna Chlumsky for HBO's Veep
        Gaby Hoffman for Amazon's Transparent
Jane Krakowski for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        Judith Light for Amazon's Transparent
Kate McKinnon for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Rita Moreno for Netflix's One Day at a Time

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
Vanessa Bayer for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Anna Chlumsky for HBO's Veep
        Kathryn Hahn for Amazon's Transparent
Leslie Jones for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Judith Light for Amazon's Transparent
Kate McKinnon for NBC's Saturday Night Live

3/6. I get the love for Saturday Night Live this year. It had a resurgence because of its new political relevancy. Getting three actresses in likely means that one of them will win. I'm just surprised to see Bayer and Jones in - even though I like both of them. I'm largely just upset that that means Rita Moreno was snubbed for a wonderful performance.

My Predictions for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:
Dave Chappelle for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Jon Hamm for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tom Hanks for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Hugh Laurie for HBO's Veep
        Peter MacNicol for HBO's Veep
        Peter Scolari for HBO's Girls

Actual Nominees for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:
        Riz Ahmed for HBO's Girls
Dave Chappelle for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Tom Hanks for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Hugh Laurie for HBO's Veep
Lin-Manuel Miranda for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Matthew Rhys for HBO's Girls

3/6. Last year MacNicol was nominated and then disqualified for appearing in too many episodes. I thought he was the frontrunner to winner because of the scene of him cackling in the hospital room. But instead, the voters went in a different direction with more of an appreciation for Saturday Night Live and Girls.

My Predictions for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
Christine Baranski for CBS' The Big Bang Theory
Angela Bassett for Netflix's Master of None
        Carrie Fisher for Amazon's Catastrophe
Melissa McCarthy for NBC's Saturday Night Live
Laurie Metcalf for CBS' The Big Bang Theory
Kristen Wiig for NBC's Saturday Night Live

Actual Nominees for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
Becky Ann Baker for HBO's Girls
Angela Bassett for Netflix's Master of None
        Carrie Fisher for Amazon's Catastrophe
Melissa McCarthy for NBC's Saturday Night Live
        Wanda Sykes for ABC's Black-ish
Kristen Wiig for NBC's Saturday Night Live

4/6. The Girls love for its final season continues in this category as well. That's nice to see. Meanwhile, it's so nice and moving to see Fisher get that posthumously nomination. The Sykes nomination is a little weird because of what she actually does on that show though.

My Predictions for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Riz Ahmed for HBO's The Night Of
Benedict Cumberbatch for PBS' Sherlock: The Lying Detective
Robert De Niro for HBO's The Wizard of Lies
        Ewan McGregor for FX's Fargo
Geoffrey Rush for National Geographic's Genius
John Turturro for HBO's The Night Of

Actual Nominees for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Riz Ahmed for HBO's The Night Of
Benedict Cumberbatch for PBS' Sherlock: The Lying Detective
Robert De Niro for HBO's The Wizard of Lies
        Ewan McGregor for FX's Fargo
Geoffrey Rush for National Geographic's Genius
John Turturro for HBO's The Night Of

6/6. Again, I should take a great pleasure in being able to correctly predict all of the nominees in one particular category. And yet, this field was so easily predictable. There were only 1-2 other actors who had a slim chance of surprising.

My Predictions for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
        Carrie Coon for FX's Fargo
Nicole Kidman for HBO's Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Susan Sarandon for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Oprah Winfrey for HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Reese Witherspoon for HBO's Big Little Lies

Actual Nominees for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
        Carrie Coon for FX's Fargo
Felicity Huffman for ABC's American Crime
Nicole Kidman for HBO's Big Little Lies
Jessica Lange for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Susan Sarandon for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Reese Witherspoon for HBO's Big Little Lies

5/6. Much like Lead Actor, this category was easy to predict. And yet, there were 8-9 performances that really deserved nominations. So, this category has many more snubs to it - Oprah Winfrey, Bryce Dallas Howard, Freida Pinto, etc. But it's great to see Coon and Huffman included.

My Predictions for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Hank Azaria for HBO's The Wizard of Lies
Martin Freeman for PBS' Sherlock: The Lying Detective
Alfred Molina for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Alexander Skarsgård for HBO's Big Little Lies
        David Thewlis for FX's Fargo
Stanley Tucci for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Bill Camp for HBO's The Night Of
Alfred Molina for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Alexander Skarsgård for HBO's Big Little Lies
        David Thewlis for FX's Fargo
Stanley Tucci for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Michael Kenneth Williams for HBO's The Night Of

4/6. The Night Of got much more love from the voters than I expected. It was a series that I really enjoyed. But it aired so long ago that I figured the voters would have forgotten about it for whatever aired more recently. I doubt either Camp or Williams will win given the other four nominees but it's nice to see them here.

My Predictions for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Judy Davis for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Laura Dern for HBO's Big Little Lies
Regina King for ABC's American Crime
Sarah Paulson for FX's American Horror Story: Roanoke
Michelle Pfeiffer for HBO's The Wizard of Lies
Mary Elizabeth Winstead for FX's Fargo

Actual Nominees for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie:
Judy Davis for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Laura Dern for HBO's Big Little Lies
Jackie Hoffman for FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
Regina King for ABC's American Crime
Michelle Pfeiffer for HBO's The Wizard of Lies
Shailene Woodley for HBO's Big Little Lies

4/6. It's definitely going to be a big battle between Big Little Lies and Feud: Bette and Joan in the limited series categories this year. Both managed to get two nominations in this category when I thought they'd only get one. It's just disappointing that it comes at the expense of Winstead who was really great on Fargo.

My Predictions for Drama Series:
        FX's The Americans
        AMC's Better Call Saul
        Netflix's The Crown
        Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
        Netflix's House of Cards
        NBC's This Is Us
        HBO's Westworld

Actual Nominees for Drama Series:
        AMC's Better Call Saul
        Netflix's The Crown
        Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
        Netflix's House of Cards
        Netflix's Stranger Things
        NBC's This Is Us
        HBO's Westworld

6/7. Trading The Americans in for Stranger Things doesn't seem that fare. And yet, it's exactly what's happened here. I love all the appreciation for new shows in this category. But if one older show needed to fall out, it was House of Cards. The Americans is great. And Netflix has three series in this race now which is a huge signal of streaming takeover.

My Predictions for Comedy Series:
        FX's Atlanta
        ABC's Black-ish
        Netflix's Master of None
        HBO's Silicon Valley
        Amazon's Transparent
        Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        HBO's Veep

Actual Nominees for Comedy Series:
        FX's Atlanta
        ABC's Black-ish
        Netflix's Master of None
        ABC's Modern Family
        HBO's Silicon Valley
        Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
        HBO's Veep

6/7. Modern Family is just going to keep getting nominated until it goes off the air. That's a fact that we should just accept already. Transparent had a more uneven season but it still deserved to be in this race. And even if the voters wanted another broadcast network show, there were so many better than Modern Family - like The Good Place or Speechless.

My Predictions for Limited Series:
        ABC's American Crime
        HBO's Big Little Lies
        FX's Fargo
        FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
        HBO's The Night Of

Actual Nominees for Limited Series:
        HBO's Big Little Lies
        FX's Fargo
        FX's Feud: Bette and Joan
        National Geographic's Genius
        HBO's The Night Of

4/5. Genius instead of American Crime seems like a fair trade off. I definitely preferred Season 3 of American Crime even though I concede it had problems. But Genius is the shiny new thing that will return for another season while American Crime was cancelled.

My Predictions for Television Movie
        Netflix's Black Mirror: San Junipero
Netflix's David Brent: Life on the Road
HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
        PBS' Sherlock: The Lying Detective
        HBO's The Wizard of Lies

Actual Nominees for Television Movie
        Netflix's Black Mirror: San Junipero
NBC's Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love
HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
        PBS' Sherlock: The Lying Detective
        HBO's The Wizard of Lies

4/5. Four of the nominees were easy to predict because they had the acclaim to get into the race. The fifth slot could have gone to anything. The voters decided to nominate the Dolly Parton movie. That was completely unexpected considering there wasn't much buzz around it. But then again, it doesn't have a chance to actually win.
