Emmy Predictions 2018 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Variety Special Pre-Recorded?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Variety Special Pre-Recorded.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Program Should Win:
  1. TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Presents: The Great American* Puerto Rico (*It's Complicated)
  2. Netflix's Dave Chappelle: Equanimity
  3. Netflix's Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life
  4. CBS' Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2018
  5. CBS' The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special

The Full Frontal special is easily the most important of the nominees here. That special did so much to remind the audience of the recent tragedy in Puerto Rico while also humanizing the stories and the impact it has on the rest of the country. It surely won't win because of the huge stars elsewhere on the ballot. But it's definitely the program that should. Meanwhile, it's just great to see Dave Chappelle, Steve Martin and Martin Short in this format again. Sure, their specials weren't their best work. But they were still distinct enough to remind viewers of why they are all beloved so much. The Carol Burnett special succeeded in that same way too. With the Carpool Karaoke primetime special, I'm mostly becoming tired of the concept. And yet, this recent one also included a Crosswalk: The Musical segment which is a great new idea from James Corden.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Program Will Win:
  1. CBS' Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2018
  2. Netflix's Dave Chappelle: Equanimity
  3. CBS' The Carol Burnett Show: 50th Anniversary Special
  4. Netflix's Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life
  5. TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Presents: The Great American* Puerto Rico (*It's Complicated)

The Carpool Karaoke primetime special is going to win in this category. There is no real question to it really. It has won for the past two years. That's the reason why CBS keeps producing a primetime special once a year. It's just to ensure that it keeps winning Emmys. Sure, they want as much James Corden content as possible too - especially with the possibility of going viral. He has more notable and viewed clips than any of the other performers in this category. His track record is clear from the current Emmy voters. As such, he's going to win. The other nominees in this category have won before as well. I feel like that's the main reason why Samantha Bee won't here simply because she still has yet to get a ton of traction when it comes to winning. I'd enjoy a solid upset. I just don't think it is going to happen here. If Corden does lose, then it's probably going to be to one of the Netflix comedy specials.
