Netflix has today given series orders to two original drama series Virgin River and Sweet Magnolias. Both shows will produce 10-episode first seasons. The pickups represent a push from the streaming service for more Hallmark-style programs.
Virgin River is a contemporary romance based on Robyn Carr's bestselling 20 book series. The series revolves around Melinda Monroe, who answers an ad to work as a nurse practitioner in the remote California town of Virgin River, thinking it'll be the perfect place to start over and leave painful memories behind. She soon discovers that small-town living isn't as simple as she expected as she is forced to heal herself before she can make Virgin River her home.
Sue Tenney (Cedar Cove, Good Witch) created the drama. She will executive produce with Roma Roth and Chris Perry. Reel World Management will produce.
Sweet Magnolias is based on Sherryl Woods' bestselling 11 book series. The series centers on three South Carolina women, best friends since high school, as they shepherd each other through the complexities of romance, career and family.
Sheryl J. Anderson (When Calls the Heart, A Summer to Remember) created the drama. She will executive produce with Dan Paulson. Daniel L. Paulson Productions will produce.
