The coven prepares for an annual ritual as Harvey takes part in a Kinkle family tradition. Sabrina grows suspicious of Lady Blackwood.
In 2018, it makes no sense to provide full-length reviews of each individual episode for shows released all at once on the streaming services. Sure, there are some shows out there that value the power of the episode. They do make a point in differentiating each episode to ensure it's not just one big slog to the finish. However, the ability to watch the entire season at one's own viewing pace has largely changed the way we consume and discuss these shows. So, some brief summary thoughts are really all that's actually necessary with these seasons. As such, here are my latest thoughts on the next episode of Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
This hour puts in the work to make Prudence a much more complicated character. So far this season, she has just been the typical high school villain who stands opposed to everything that Sabrina is trying to do. Their dynamic has been perfectly fine. It's been complicated as well because Sabrina has asked the Weird Sisters for help in the past. But now, more secrets are coming out that are forcing Sabrina's two worlds further apart. She is absolutely horrified by the ritual at the center of this hour. The Feast of Feasts seems absolutely barbaric. Moreover, it may not even be the will of the Dark Lord. Edward was able to ban the ritual during his time as high priest. The world didn't change or worsen because of that either. Blackwell only brought it back in order to establish his dominance over the coven once more. He needed a return to tradition in order to remain in power. It's just absolutely gruesome. Sure, it also informs so much of the ancestry of Greendale. This is a place where a lot of dark things have happened over the years. There are tales told from both sides of this conflict as well. Harvey's family sees no problem with owning the mines and going out hunting deer on Thanksgiving. And yet, that is steeped in darkness that comes from them being witch hunters in the past. There is the fear that they are once again at the center of the coven being targeted. Sabrina has complete faith in Harvey not being able to kill anyone. However, she still fears what could happen if she told him the truth about her identity. Roz and Susie may be more than understanding. Susie's ancestor is actually revered in the coven for helping witches escape persecution. Meanwhile, Roz's family has been cursed but gifted new abilities thanks to their loss of sight. As such, the two of them are open to the idea of fantastical elements in their lives. But Sabrina is still deceiving them. Prudence shows no interest in maintaining this facade of what mortals can know. She just wants to turn on Harvey for the sins of his family. She wants to have fun at the expense of mortals. That has always put her into conflict with Sabrina because she actually cares for her mortal friends. In the end, it's that compassion that saves Prudence's life and leads to a couple of revelations about her own lineage. This episode explains that the Weird Sisters aren't actually related at all. They are just orphans who have bonded together due to similar abilities at the academy. They have done everything together. That's what makes them so powerful and dangerous. But Prudence is actually special. She believes she's been chosen by the Dark Lord to be the Queen of the Feast of Feasts. It's an honor she has long wanted in her life because of the promises that come for her eternal life afterwards. She believes so fiercely. There is nothing Sabrina can do or say that will make her lose her faith in the Dark Lord. And yet, the devil isn't the one who chose Prudence. This ritual is attacked by those with personal vendettas. Prudence is chosen because she represents a threat to the heirs that Lady Blackwood is carrying. She doesn't want Prudence to take away the position of high priest from her children. She can only do so because she's actually Blackwell's daughter. That's huge and pretty damning. It's clear that he is still willing to protect her after the truth comes out. However, everyone still indulges in this ceremony as soon as a new sacrifice comes forward. That further proves just how toxic and twisted this religion can actually be. Only Sabrina, Zelda and Nicholas stand in horror to what they are witnessing. Moreover, Lady Blackwood may have succeeded in breaking up the Weird Sisters because the other two don't invite Prudence to carry out their attack on Harvey and Tommy. That's very ominous.
