Casting News - Karrie Martin, JJ Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquín Cosio to Star in Netflix's 'Gentefied'; Plus 3 More Updates!

Casting News - April 5, 2019

Apple's Defending Jacob; CBS All Access' Why Women Kill; Hulu's Looking for Alaska; and Netflix's Gentefied.

NETFLIX's GENTEFIED
  • Karrie Martin, JJ Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquín Cosio will star in the upcoming dramedy created by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez. Martin's guest credits include E!'s The Arrangement and USA's The Purge. Soria starred for two seasons in Lifetime's Army Wives and two seasons in Sony Crackle's The Oath. Santos' guest credits include FOX's The Last Man on Earth and CBS' 2 Broke Girls. Cosio starred for two seasons in FX's The Strain and one season in Netflix's Narcos: Mexico.
  • Martin will play Ana Morales, a sarcastic, woke, blunt and endearing queer artist. She is a Chicana who leads with her heart and fights for her art with untethered conviction. She loves her abuelo and her entire family almost to a fault.
  • Soria will play Erik, a wisecracking, well-read, charismatic but tough homie with a heart of gold. He's a high school dropout, but there isn't a book in the local library he hasn't read. He's a reluctant dreamer trying to find his way back to himself. But his loyalty to his grandfather who took him in keeps him from putting time into himself or Lidia, the love of his life.
  • Santos will play Chris, the prodigal grandson, a fun-loving, know-it-all, chef-in-training. He is a homegrown Boyle Heights boy who moved to Idaho at a young age and was abruptly introduced to Weezer and cow-tipping. His cousins call him guero for acting and looking like a white boy, which always leaves him wondering if he'll ever be Mexican enough for anyone.
  • Cosio will play Pop, a hard-working, stoic but warm, old-fashioned ranchero and the rock of the Morales family. Though gruff with his Tejana and potty-mouth ("cabron" is his favorite word!), he has a huge heart, but that also means a lot of heartache trying to protect them.
HULU's LOOKING FOR ALASKA
  • Timothy Simons and Ron Cephas Jones have joined the cast of the upcoming limited series starring Charlie Plummer and Kristine Froseth. Simons has starred for seven seasons in HBO's Veep, which is currently airing its final episodes. Jones won an Emmy Award for his performance in NBC's This Is Us. He next stars in the upcoming AppleTV+ drama Truth Be Told opposite Octavia Spencer, Lizzy Caplan and Aaron Paul.
  • Simons will play The Eager, a stern and humorless character who is devoted to the code of Culver Creek Academy. He runs the school and enjoys the power. He warns Miles (Plummer) against following in his father's prankster footsteps.
  • Jones will play Dr. Hyde, a History of Religion teacher at Culver Creek Academy who is impossibly old with only one lung. But once he's in full command, he is an enthralling presence who finds his own jokes amusing and who has been very smart for a very long time indeed.
APPLE's DEFENDING JACOB
  • Cherry Jones, Pablo Schreiber, Betty Gabriel and Sakina Jaffrey have been cast on the upcoming limited series starring Chris Evans. Jones is a two-time Tony Award winner for The Heiress and Doubt as well as an Emmy Award winner for FOX's 24. Schreibder stars in Starz's American Gods, which is currently airing its second season. Gabriel starred in the second season of Starz's Counterpart. Jaffrey starred for two seasons in NBC's Timeless.
  • Jones will play Joanna Klein, a top defense lawyer in the area.
  • Schreiber will play Neal Loguidice, another Assistant District Attorney and colleague of Andy's (Evans).
  • Gabriel will play Paula Duffy, a detective who works alongside Andy.
  • Jaffrey will play County District Attorney Lynn Canavan.
CBS ALL ACCESS' WHY WOMEN KILL
  • Katie Finneran has landed a recurring role on the upcoming dramedy starring Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. She is a two-time Tony Award winner for Noises Off and Promises, Promises. She also starred for three seasons in Netflix's Bloodline and recurs on IFC's Brockmire.
  • She will play Naomi. Seen in 1982. Upscale, brash and fun, she is one of Simone's (Liu) friends and Tommy's (Leo Howard) mother. Effusive, she is a cheerful widow, left six million when her husband dies, which she claims was "pretty nice."
