From June 10 to June 24, 2019, voting took place for The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As such, it's fun to look at which actors and shows have the best chances of actually being nominated this year. So, here is how I see the race for Comedy Series.
2018 Nominees:
FX's Atlanta
HBO's Barry
ABC's Black-ish
HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm
Netflix's GLOW
Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (WINNER)
HBO's Silicon Valley
Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
HBO's Barry
ABC's Black-ish
HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm
Netflix's GLOW
Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (WINNER)
HBO's Silicon Valley
Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Upon close inspection, there appears to be four shows that are essentially locks to get nominations this year - Veep, Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Kominsky Method. Three of them have strong track records at the Emmys - with two being the most recent winners in the category. Meanwhile, the Netflix comedy won the Golden Globe. Now, that isn't always a great test for getting into the same race at the Emmys. And yet, The Kominsky Method has a lot of positives in its appeal to Emmy voters as it's a show set inside the showbiz industry. Meanwhile, anything could happen elsewhere in this category. Black-ish and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are veterans of the field. And yet, their age may keep the voters from going for them again in favor of something new. There sure is a ton of great new shows that deserve praise as well. Even GLOW may not get a nomination after coming out strong a year ago. It will be an extremely competitive race to fill out this category. Conventional wisdom may put the odds in favor of new shows like Russian Doll or Dead to Me. However, surging contenders like The Good Place, Fleabag and Better Things which delivered strong seasons recently could also be well positioned to enter the field. There are lots of options and uncertainty heading into nomination morning.
