From June 10 to June 24, 2019, voting took place for The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As such, it's fun to look at which actors and shows have the best chances of actually being nominated this year. So, here is how I see the race for Drama Series.
2018 Nominees:
FX's The Americans
Netflix's The Crown
HBO's Game of Thrones (WINNER)
Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Netflix's Stranger Things
NBC's This Is Us
HBO's Westworld
Netflix's The Crown
HBO's Game of Thrones (WINNER)
Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale
Netflix's Stranger Things
NBC's This Is Us
HBO's Westworld
As has been previously stated numerous times this prediction cycle, the drama race is in a really weird place at the moment. Game of Thrones has been seen as the monster of the category with some rival shows opting not to take it on this year. They feared that they would lose out and not get the recognition they deserved for their own achievements. That's fair. Of course, it has also created such a wide open race for Best Drama Series this year. This Is Us and Better Call Saul have previously gotten nominations as well. That means that a portion of the category will likely comprise known quantities. The rest is completely up-in-the-air. It could be a year of dramatic change that welcomes a ton of first-season shows into the mix. Those possibilities include Pose, Succession, Homecoming, Bodyguard, Jack Ryan, Hanna and Sex Education. But there are additional contenders who have been shut out of the category before that may get an added boost because of the openness of the field. That list includes Killing Eve, Ozark, The Deuce, The Good Fight and Narcos. All of this means that there are many possibilities for what may happen this year. And yet, it doesn't seem as exciting as it should be because of the inevitability of Game of Thrones being crowned the winner. That shouldn't be the case. It should be more competitive than yet. But the race does feel stale. The new blood has the potential of shaking things up. It should just be interesting to see how much the voters actually embrace that.
