Showtime Gives Series Order to Drama 'Rust' Starring Jeff Daniels

Showtime has today given a series order to the original drama series Rust starring Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (Godless, The Looming Tower).

Based on the novel American Rust by Philipp Meyer, the drama centers on Del Harris (Daniels), the complicated and compromised police chief of a town in southwestern Pennsylvania. When the son of the woman he loves is accused of murder, Harris must decide what he's willing to do to protect the young man.

Dan Futterman (The Looming Tower, Foxcatcher) developed the drama. He will executive produce with Daniels, Michael De Luca and Elisa Ellis. Platform One Media will produce in association with Showtime.

A series based on the novel was previously given a straight-to-series order at USA Network in 2017. That project ultimately didn't move forward due to difficulty casting the lead role. That version was developed by Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman - who are no longer involved.

"Jeff Daniels is a bona fide giant on stage and screen, and Dan Futterman is a special writer and we couldn't be more thrilled to have them together at Showtime," said Gary Levine, Co-President, Showtime Entertainment. "With vibrant characters caught in an unpredictable murder mystery, Rust will tell the relevant and touching human story of the corrosion of the American dream."
