Former Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam will play the lead role in the upcoming original drama series Shantaram, which has officially received a series order at AppleTV+ today with his casting. Production is set to begin later this year for a 2020 debut.
Based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts, the drama follows Lin (Hunnam), a man on the run from an Australian prison looking to get lost in the teeming city of Bombay. Cut off from family and friends by distance and fate, he finds a new life in the slums, bars and underworld of India.

Eric Warren Singer developed the drama, with Justin Kurzel set to direct the first two episodes. They will executive produce with Dave Erickson, Steve Golin, Nicole Clemens, Andrea Barron and Richard Sharkey. Paramount Television and Anonymous Content will produce.
The drama will produce 10 episodes for its first season.
