CBS All Access has today renewed its original drama series Star Trek: Picard for a second season - a month ahead of its series debut. An episode count and premiere date window were not immediately announced.
The drama follows Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard 20 years after the events of his last appearance in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.
In addition to Stewart, the drama stars Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway.
Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Del Arco, Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes are also set to reprise their Star Trek chracters on a recurring basis in the first season.
Alex Kurtzman developed the drama, with Michael Chabon serving as showrunner. They executive produce with Stewart, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and director Hanelle Culpepper. CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment produce.
The drama is currently looking for a new showrunner to succeed Chabon, who signed a new overall deal with CBS Television Studios last week. He is choosing to focus on development - which includes a Showtime limited series adaptation of his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. He remains actively involved in shaping the narrative of the second season though.
The first season debuts on Thursday, January 23 and will release new episodes on a weekly basis.
