From July 2 to July 13, 2020, voting took place for The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As such, it's fun to look at which actors and shows have the best chances of actually being nominated this year. So, these are my predictions for which programs will be nominated for Comedy Series.
2019 Nominees:
HBO's Barry
Amazon's Fleabag (WINNER)
NBC's The Good Place
Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Netflix's Russian Doll
Pop's Schitt's Creek
HBO's Veep
NBC's The Good Place
Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Netflix's Russian Doll
Pop's Schitt's Creek
HBO's Veep
This category was insanely competitive a year ago. And now, it's undergoing a bit of a dramatic shift. Former winners Fleabag and Veep have concluded their runs. Barry and Russian Doll didn't produce any new episodes in the eligibility window. The number of nominees is going up. That means there will be so many possibilities for what will happen here. Past nominees The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Schitt's Creek and The Good Place are more than likely going to compete once more. That still leaves half the category up in the air. That is especially crazy. It's easy to see a reality in which growing support elsewhere will fuel Ramy, Dead to Me and Insecure into this race as well. It's also just as easy to think the voters will embrace past favorites like Modern Family, Black-ish, Silicon Valley and GLOW. Or the race could feature newcomers that will surprisingly prove to have strong overall numbers from the voters like The Great and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. These possibilities make the race incredible fluid. A show like Better Things could finally receive a long overdue nomination. The Kominsky Method could slide into the race despite missing out for its buzzier first season. A completely random nomination could also happen that no one is expecting at this point. That makes this race exciting. It's always difficult to gauge which shows have momentum. That is more true in this category than it has been in a long time.
For the 2020 awards ceremony, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences decided to tie the number of nominations to the number of submissions in each category. For Comedy Series, 111 programs were eligible on the ballot. That will translate to eight nominees in this category.
