The nominations have been announced for The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
The Nominees Ranked By Which Should Win:
- Maya Rudolph for NBC's The Good Place - "You've Changed, Man"
- Angela Bassett for HBO's A Black Lady Sketch Show - "Angela Bassett Is the Baddest Bitch"
- Wanda Sykes for Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - "A Jewish Girl Walks into the Apollo..."
- Phoebe Waller-Bridge for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: Phoebe Waller-Bridge"
- Maya Rudolph for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: Eddie Murphy"
- Bette Midler for Netflix's The Politician - "Vienna"
Maya Rudolph is a phenomenal addition to any show that has the brilliant idea to add her. She is a gifted performer who always brings something different and unusual to each character she plays. The Judge on The Good Place could be over-exaggerated while delighting in the shows she's watching. And yet, she was always fun to watch because Rudolph was playing her. It was such a vital role that always determined the fate of humanity. But it was also just silly and goofy fun. Rudolph perfected that charm as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. She returned to the veteran comedy last fall as presidential candidate Kamala Harris. That impression is about to become even more relevant and popular due to Vice President Joe Biden choosing the Senator to be his running mate. That is greatly anticipated for the upcoming fall. It was an active guest role during only one sketch in the episode though. In fact, several of the performers here stand out with limited screen time. Angela Bassett is marvelous in her one sketch. Wanda Sykes always brings comedic power. Her brief stand-up set in the Mrs. Maisel finale was no exception. Meanwhile, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has a substantial role as the SNL host. But all of these performers know that it only takes a few seconds for the audience to fall in love with what they are doing.

In Fleabag's second season, Phoebe Waller-Bridge became a massive Emmy favorite. She won so many awards for that show. The voters overwhelmingly responded well to it. As such, she has to be seen as a strong contender whenever she gets nominated again. That may not mean she will win this prize. But she is certainly competitive for it. The same goes to Bette Midler. The Politician was mostly overlooked by the voters. But Midler is a legend whose historic career has already led to numerous awards. Maya Rudolph is also beloved by these voters. They nominated her twice here! That takes a whole lot of support. The performances and shows are different. Her work on SNL may have the slight edge only because it's a more known quantity amongst the voters. However, The Good Place will probably win something major this year for its final season. Why can't that be Rudolph's guest role? In fact, all of these nominees could present reasonable arguments for why they should win. It's hard to speculate because it's all up to how a group of voters decide to throw their support. Wanda Sykes is a perennial nominee. However, she has never won for acting. She has won for writing but that was over 20 years ago. All of this basically amounts to a category that is fluid and could reward any of these deserving actresses.
