Emmy Predictions 2020 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Structured Reality Series?

The nominations have been announced for The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on which shows will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Structured Reality Program.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Should Win:
  1. HGTV's A Very Brady Renovation
  2. Netflix's Queer Eye
  3. ABC's Shark Tank
  4. PBS' Antiques Roadshow
  5. Netflix's Love Is Blind

This category has an eclectic group of nominees. It has former winners in Shark Tank and Queer Eye, perennial nominee Antiques Roadshow, and new formats A Very Brady Renovation and Love Is Blind. The last two are actually the most interesting inclusions on the list. They are both essentially nostalgia plays. That was much more apparent with the HGTV series as it reassembled the Brady Bunch cast to renovate the real-life house. That brought so much joy while garnering a massive audience for the cable outlet. With Love Is Blind, it was the latest play on a trashy reality dating show. One that had a specific hook meant to entice viewers as they watch attractive contestants search for love. It's a format that is everywhere because it has a very specific audience. A person will either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground. The reaction for the other nominees may be more varied. The reception to Queer Eye isn't the same as it was when it first premiered. However, it's still largely appreciated. The same goes to Shark Tank and Antiques Roadshow which continue to provide reliable content for those viewers.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Will Win:
  1. Netflix's Queer Eye
  2. ABC's Shark Tank
  3. Netflix's Love Is Blind
  4. HGTV's A Very Brady Renovation
  5. PBS' Antiques Roadshow

Queer Eye is currently the two-time reigning champion of this category. It's hard to craft a convincing argument for why the other nominees could prevail this year. Shark Tank always has to be seen as a threat because it has won four times already. Moreover, its hosts are listed amongst the executive producers who would be given trophies if the show won this year. It's the first time that has happened which may incentivize the voters. Of course, the investors are also nominated in the hosting category. That means there are two opportunities for them to win. There is a difference between Queer Eye the show winning and the personalities at the center of it winning. That distinction is key as well and makes both sides formidable in these races. Love Is Blind could absolutely garner some support as well. Netflix pulled in a large haul of nominations. That love is across the board. But it's also clear that the voters love Queer Eye a great deal - the easier Netflix show to support here. A Very Brady Renovation could also surprise with a win. However, it seems unlikely to be the first HGTV show to do so. If Property Brothers and Fixer Upper couldn't prevail, it seems unlikely that this would be the year for the cable outlet. That mentality extends to Antiques Roadshow too. After 16 nominations, it seems always destined to never pull off a victory. It has enough support to be a part of the conversation but that's about it.
