Netflix has today decided to cancel the original comedy series I Am Not Okay With This and the original drama series The Society after their first seasons. The streaming service notes the rising costs of production due to the novel coronavirus pandemic as motivation for the sudden cancellations.
The Society starred Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jacques Colimon, Olivia DeJonge, Alex Fitzalan, Kristine Froseth, Jose Julian, Alexander MacNicoll, Jack Mulhern, Toby Wallace, Olivia Nikkanen and Rachel Keller.
Christopher Keyser created the drama. He executive produced with Marc Webb.
I Am Not Okay With This starred Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Sofia Bryant and Kathleen Rose Perkins.
Jonathan Entwistle and Christy Hall created the comedy. They executive produced with Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine and Josh Barry. 21 Laps Entertainment produced.
Both shows had scripts written for their respective second seasons. I Am Not Okay With This had been informally picked up, while The Society was officially renewed in July 2019. Production was expected to commence on both shows later this year. Despite their well receptions from critics and fans, Netflix opted not to continue with production due to the uncertainty of when they could restart safely and balancing the availabilities of the casts. One would think Netflix would have the resources to navigate these uncertainties and return to production whenever it best suited each show. The consumer is used to long wait times between seasons for some of the streamer's biggest hits. Instead, the service has opted to be more cautious - which seems likely to upset fans of both series.
