The nominations have been announced for The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Television Movie.
The Nominees Ranked By Which Should Win:
- Netflix's El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie
- Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend
- HBO's Bad Education
- Netflix's American Son
- Netflix's Dolly Parton's Heartstrings - "These Old Bones"
Fear pops up whenever the creative team decides to explore the world of Breaking Bad once more. It always goes well. However, that uncertainty still persists because of the prior greatness. Better Call Saul is a wonderful show. As such, the expectations were high for El Camino. It was a direct sequel to the Breaking Bad series finale as well. It told a story about Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman that didn't necessarily needed to be told. However, it was done with such style and flair that it was easy to appreciate the entire endeavor. It allowed for more time to be spent in this rich and expansive universe. Plus, it took a universally beloved character and gave him a happy ending without any uncertainty whatsoever. Some could see that as fan service. However, it still offered meaningful callbacks that recognized all the greatness that happened in the former series. The Kimmy Schmidt interactive special did the same thing. It gave the viewer the choice to make numerous decisions for the characters. The ultimate goal was for all of them to receive their happy and perfect endings. The choices didn't always add up to that in the end. Plus, the amount of jokes in every situation was staggering. The special proved that those writers are still operating at their peaks when it came to giving the cast some creative and hilarious things to do.

HBO has historically been a juggernaut in this particular category. It always submits a strong entry that could very well walk away with the prize. It has done that on numerous occasions as well. However, HBO hasn't won here since 2015 with Bessie. It's not for a lack of trying either. It continues to produce strong contenders. It has simply been bulldozed over the last three years by Black Mirror. That anthology series always produced an episode long enough to be entered here. It didn't this year. That creates a bit of upheaval in this race. Of course, Netflix still has four contenders up for the award. As such, it is statistically likely to win. And yet, the voters could also consolidate around Bad Education because it's the only film from HBO. The Netflix section of the vote will be split four ways. However, it's likely that El Camino will gather a ton of support. Breaking Bad was always an Emmy favorite - especially in its last few seasons. Projects extending from that beloved series don't have the same track record with these voters. However, a film is different than a prequel series. And so, that makes El Camino extremely competitive. It's hard to see American Son, Heartstrings and Kimmy Schmidt rising to the top. If they do, then it will likely be because of the auspices behind-the-scenes. It could happen. This just seems like a race between Bad Education and El Camino at the moment.
