Casting has officially begun for the upcoming John Wick prequel limited series The Continental, which has been ordered as a three-night event series for Starz. Mel Gibson (the Lethal Weapon franchise) has signed on to star in a lead role.
The series will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. A young Winston Scott is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he'd left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the city's mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world's most dangerous criminals.
Gibson will play Cormac. No additional character details were released today.
Keanu Reeves toplines the film franchise as John Wick. Ian McShane plays Winston Scott in the present-day storyline. Neither of them are expected to appear in the television prequel series, though they could eventually come aboard as executive producers.
Greg Coolidge and Kirk Ward created the series. They will executive produce with Derek Kolstad, Chad Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, David Leitch, Shawn Simmons, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Lionsgate Television and Thunder Road Pictures will produce.
