AppleTV+ has today given a series order to the original half-hour comedic drama Sunny starring Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, BlackAF). The first season will produce 10 episodes.
Based on the novel Dark Manual by Colin O'Sullivan, the series will center on Suzie (Jones), an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As "consolation," she's given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband's electronics company. Though at first Suzie resents Sunny's attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship, as together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie's family, becoming dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.
Katie Robbins developed the series, with Lucy Tcherniak set to direct. They will executive produce with Jones, Ravi Nandan and Jess Lubben. A24 will produce.
The series marks the third collaboration between Jones and Apple - following the 2020 film On the Rocks, which she starred in and produced, and the upcoming drama Wool, which she will co-star in opposite Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Robbins and David Oyelowo.
