AMC has today given a series order to the original drama series The Driver starring Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul). The first season will produce six episodes, which will debut in 2023.
Based on a U.K. format, the drama will follow a taxi driver (Esposito) whose life is turned upside down when he agrees to chauffeur a New Orleans-based Zimbabwean gangster notorious for exploiting undocumented immigrants at the U.S. southern ports.
Sonu Gonera and Danny Brocklehurst created the drama, with Theo Travers set to serve as showrunner. Gonera will also direct the premiere. All three will executive produce with Esposito, Josh Kesselman, Danny Sherman, Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson. A+E Studios and Thruline Entertainment will produce.
"Giancarlo is a singular talent who is already beloved by AMC viewers through his standout performances in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul," said Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment, AMC Studios and AMC Networks. "We are excited to be continuing his relationship with AMC and AMC+ in a series built around him and an unforgettable character who takes what he thinks is a straightforward job opportunity and finds himself confronted with a world that tests him in ways he could never have imagined."
