Hulu has today given a series order to the original comedy series Unprisoned starring Kerry Washington (Scandal, Little Fires Everywhere) and Delroy Lindo (The Good Fight, Anansi Boys). The comedy from Onyx Collective will produce eight episodes for its first season.
Inspired by the life of Tracy McMillan, the comedy will follow a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mother (Washington) whose life is turned right-side-up when her father (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.
McMillan created the comedy, with Yvette Lee Bowser serving as showrunner. They will executive produce with Washington, Lindo, Pilar Savone, Joy Gorman Wettels and Jen Braeden. ABC Signature, Anonymous Content and Simpson Street Productions will produce.
"This isn't just my story," said McMillan. "It's the story of millions of people dealing with the effects of mass incarceration on their families, hearts, minds and bodies... and as writers, we wanted to come to these flawed but super-lovable characters from the place of empathy, humor and soul that they deserve."
