Only three months into production on its first season, Spectrum has today renewed its original drama series Beacon 23 starring Lena Headey and Stephan James for a second season. The plan is for the drama to remain in production and shoot the two seasons back-to-back.
Zak Penn developed the drama based on the novel by Hugh Howey. He serves as showrunner for the first season. However, Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake have been tapped as co-showrunners for the second season.
The series is slated to premiere as a Spectrum Original in 2023 with a second window across AMC Networks platforms.
The drama follows two people - Aster (Headey) and Halan (James) - whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together at the end of the known universe. Aster mysteriously finds her way to a lonely beacon keeper, on his lighthouse in the darkest recesses of space. A tense battle of wills unfolds as Halan begins to question whether Aster is friend or foe as her ability to disguise her agenda and motives could make her a formidable opponent.
Penn, Mazzara and Blake executive produce with Headey, Ira Steven Behr, Tina Thor, Elisa Ellis and Katie O'Connell Marsh. Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks produce alongside Platform One Media, Boat Rocker Studios and Peephole Productions.
