Amazon has today picked up an original limited series inspired by the FTX scandal created by David Weil (Hunters, Invasion) and executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (the Captain America and Avengers franchises). The series will produce 8 episodes, with production tentatively scheduled to start in spring 2023.
FTX was founded in 2019 by Sam Bankman-Fried and became one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Recently, the company has imploded, with more than $2 billion in customer funds reportedly missing and investigations underway by federal agencies. The series is expected to be based on "insider reporting" by a number of journalists. However, the precise source material for the show has not been announced.
Weil will write the premiere, with the Russo brothers in talks to direct. All three will executive produce with Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes and Natalie Laine Williams. Amazon Studios and AGBO will produce.
"We are excited to be able to continue our great working relationship with David, Joe, Anthony and the AGBO team with this fascinating event series," said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. "I can't think of better partners to bring this multifaceted story to our global Prime Video audience."
"This is one of the most brazen frauds ever committed," added the Russo brothers. "It crosses many sectors - celebrity, politics, academia, tech, criminality, sex, drugs, and the future of modern finance. At the center of it all sits an extremely mysterious figure with complex and potentially dangerous motivations. We want to understand why.
