MGM+ has today picked up the stateside rights to the original limited series A Spy Among Friends starring Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce. The series was commissioned by ITV, which will premiere the series next month. Spectrum was originally announced as the stateside partner, until the service opted to exit the programming space.
The six-episode limited series will premiere on MGM+ (formerly Epix) in 2023.
Based on the novel by Ben Macintyre, the series dramatizes the true story of two British spies and lifelong friends, Nicholas Elliott (Lewis) and Kim Philby (Pearce). The latter became the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history. Philby's deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American intelligence.
In addition to Lewis and Pearce, the series stars Anna Maxwell Martin, Stephen Kunken and Adrian Edmondson.
Alexander Cary developed the series. He executive produces with Lewis, Patrick Spence, Chrissy Skinns, Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and director Nick Murphy. ITV Studios, Sony Pictures Television, Ginger Biscuit Entertainment and Veritas Entertainment Group produce.
"Alex Cary has brilliantly adapted Ben Macintyre's historical novel about friendship, loyalty, and betrayal," said Michael Wright, Head of MGM+. "He, along with Nick Murphy, Damian Lewis, and the remarkable cast led by Lewis and Guy Pearce, have brought to life this riveting tale of two British spies whose deep personal bond and long friendship is challenged by duplicity and deception. This series is emblematic of our new MGM+ brand and the rich, cinematic, and character-driven stories we aim to tell."
