Starz has today renewed its original drama series Outlander for an eighth and final season. The renewal comes ahead of the drama's return for its seventh season this summer. Moreover, the premium cable network has given a series order to the Outlander prequel series Blood of My Blood.
Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, David Berry, Caitlin O'Ryan, Paul Gorman, Charles Vandervaart, Izzy Meikle-Small and Joey Phillips.
Matthew B. Roberts serves as showrunner on the drama based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon. He executive produces with Balfe, Heughan, Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries and Jim Kohlberg. Sony Pictures Television, Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures and Story Mining & Supply Company produce.
The 16-episode seventh season will premiere Summer 2023. The eighth and final season will produce 10 episodes.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood will center on the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie. The series will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain.
Matthew B. Roberts developed the prequel and will serve as showrunner for the first season. He will also executive produce with Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis. Sony Pictures Television, Tall Ship Productions and Story Mining & Supply Company will produce.
The first season will also produce 10 episodes.
"For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we're pleased to bring Claire and Jamie's epic love story to a proper conclusion," said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming, Starz. "But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We're thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can't wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next."
