MGM+ has given a series order to the original drama series The Winter King based on the Warlord Chronicles series by Bernard Cornwell. The premium cable outlet has also announced a premiere date for the 10-episode first season.
The first season will premiere on Sunday, August 20 at 9/8c.
The drama is set in the fifth century, long before Britain was united, in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes, where lives were often fleeting. The series follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader.
The drama stars Iain De Caestecker, Eddie Marsan, Ellie James, Nathaniel Martello-White, Stuart Campbell, Daniel Ings, Valene Kane, Jordan Alexandra, Simon Merrells, Steven Elder, Andrew Gower, Aneirin Hughes, Emily John, Tatjana Nardone, Ken Nwosu and Billy Postlethwaite.
Kate Brooke and Ed Whitmore developed the drama. They executive produce with Julie Gardner, Lachlan MacKinnon, Jane Tranter, Sherry Marsh, Shelley Browning, Kenneth L. Browning and director Otto Bathurst. Sony Pictures Television, Bad Wolf and One Big Picture produce.
"The Winter King is a cinematic and imaginative reinterpretation of the Arthurian legend," said Michael Wright, Head of MGM+. "Kate Brooke, Ed Whitmore, and the magnificent cast take viewers on a fascinating and entertaining journey through this timeless tale told through a new lens."
