HBO has today decided to cancel its original drama series The Idol after one season. The drama completed its 5-episode run on July 2, 2023.
HBO released the following statement on the cancellation: "The Idol was one of HBO's most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We're grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work."
The drama starred Lily-Rose Depp, Abel Tesfaye, Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Jane Adams, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Hari Nef, Jennie Ruby Jane, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey and Hank Azaria.
Tesfaye (also known as The Weeknd) co-created the drama with Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. They executive produced with Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, Aaron L. Gilbert and Sara E. White. A24 produced.
