HBO Gives Series Order to Comedy 'The Franchise' Starring Himesh Patel, Aya Cash and Billy Magnussen

HBO has today given a series order to the original comedy series The Franchise starring Himesh Patel (Station Eleven), Aya Cash (You're the Worst) and Billy Magnussen (Made for Love).

The crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. The series shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question - how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f*ck-up has an origin story.

In addition to Patel, Cash and Magnussen, the comedy stars Jessica Hynes, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein and Isaac Powell.

Furthermore, Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl will appear as recurring guest stars.

Jon Brown wrote the pilot, which was directed by Sam Mendes. They executive produce with Armando Iannucci, Jim Kleverweis, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown and Julie Pastor. Neal Street Productions and Dundee Productions produce.

"With a deft touch only he can bring, Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and the reality of filmmaking today," said Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of HBO Programming and Head of HBO & Max Comedy Series. "Jon is superb at sending up worlds we think we already know. Together, with Armando, they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble. I can't wait to see more."

Production on the pilot was completed before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes began. Production on the remainder of the first season will commence once new deals are struck with the AMPTP.
