Freeform has today decided to cancel its original drama series Cruel Summer after two seasons and Good Trouble after five seasons. The former ended in Summer 2023 while the final episodes of the later will debut in January 2024.
The second season of Cruel Summer starred Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada, Sean Blakemore, Paul Adelstein and Braeden De La Garza.
Bert V. Royal created the drama, while Elle Triedman served as showrunner. They executive produced with Jessica Biel, Michelle Purple, Bill Purple and Tia Napolitano. eOne and Iron Ocean Productions produced.
The anthology drama concluded after 20 episodes on July 31, 2023.
Good Trouble stars Cierra Ramirez, Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Bryan Craig, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence and Booboo Stewart.
Joanna Johnson serves as showrunner. She executive produces with Ramirez, Christine Sacani, Greg Gugliotta, Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
The drama's final episodes begin airing Tuesday, January 2 at 10/9c. The drama will return to production shortly to film additional material for the supersized series finale to better wrap up the various storylines.
With the recent cancellation of Praise Petey after one season and Grown-ish concluding with its upcoming sixth season in 2024, Freeform is moving out of the original scripted business. The network executives are currently reassessing their programming strategy. A return to scripted is possible in the future. The network doesn't have any projects in active development in that space.
