Season 2 of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' Lands Premiere Date on Amazon

Amazon has today announced the premiere date for the upcoming second season of its original drama series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The 8-episode second season will launch on Thursday, August 29 with its first three episodes. New episodes will then be released weekly every Thursday until the season finale on October 3.

In the new season, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. The new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots... as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all... each other.

The drama stars Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Geoff Morrell, Tyroe Muhafidin, Peter Mullan, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Alex Tarrant, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker and Daniel Weyman.

New additions for the second season include Gabriel Akuwudike, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Yasen Atour, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Ben Daniels, Kevin Eldon, Sam Hazeldine, Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, Amelia Kenworthy, Will Keen, Selina Lo, Calam Lynch, Tanya Moodie, Nia Towle and Nicholas Woodeson.

J.D. Paynce and Patrick McKay developed the drama which takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. They executive produce with Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill and Gennifer Hutchison. Amazon MGM Studios and New Line Cinema produce.
