Based on the novel by Charles Yu, the series follows Willis Wu (Yang), a background character trapped in a police procedural called "Black & White." Relegated to the background, he goes through the motions of his onscreen job, waiting tables and dreaming about a whole world beyond Chinatown. When he inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, Willis begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, his family's buried history, and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.
In addition to Yang, the drama stars Ronny Chieng, Chloe Bennet, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao and Diana Lin.
Yu adapted his novel into the series. He executive produces with Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Jeff Skoll, Miura Kite, Elsie Choi, Garrett Basch and director Taika Waititi. 20th Television, Rideback, Participant and Dive produce.
