REVIEW: 'Agatha All Along' - William Kaplan Struggles With His Identity After a Tragic Accident in 'Familiar by Thy Side'

Disney+'s Agatha All Along - Episode 1.06 "Familiar by Thy Side"

Familiar Teen is much more than he seems, and his connections to the rest of the coven are revealed.

"
Familiar by Thy Side" was written by Jason Rostovsky and directed by Gandja Monteiro

Wanda created her sons Billy and Tommy through chaos magic. Once she ended the Hex over Westview, she believed they were killed too. She was obsessed with reuniting with them. The Darkhold led her to believe she had to transcend the multiverse to make that happen. In reality, Billy's consciousness obtained refuge in a recently deceased host nearby. He was in the next town over. For three years, Billy has tried to make sense of what happened. He has no memories of what occurred before the accident. Yet his destiny was already written on the palm of his new body. Agatha is curious about how that happened once she pulls herself out of the mud. She doesn't particularly care. The narrative itself does. This episode details Billy's backstory. It's a tragedy filled with hope. It offers his perspective on some of the events previously told. He broke Agatha free from her curse for a reason. He saw her as a powerful ally who can give him what he wants. He too is motivated by family. He doesn't seek his most infamous connection though. Instead, he believes his brother survived as well. He needs to find him.

The Witches' Road will give people what they are missing if they make it to the end. The majority of its travelers embark on this adventure in pursuit of power. That's what drives Agatha and the other members of the coven. They need that in order to restore themselves to their former glory. Billy already has power. He put that on display at the conclusion of the previous episode. He defeated the entire coven. He can't control it. He must be in a place of heightened emotion to access his power. And so, he may desire what every other witch on the Road wants. He may not be so different after all. Agatha notes that he is a survivor. That's how she frames him taking over William Kaplan's body. This 13-year-old was perfectly happy surrounded by family and friends at his Bar Mitzvah. Everything went awry because of the Hex. They were affected even though they weren't under its influence. In the years that followed, the truth has been concealed. The citizens of Westview know the truth. They refuse to talk about Wanda. That's a tragedy they can't bear to endure ever again. Many residents chose to stay. Others fled because of the pain this place still carries.

Billy no longer trusts Agatha. This has suddenly turned into his personal story of finding strength in his identity. The sigil was placed on him by Lilia. She forgot about it the moment it was cast. That's the consequence of this magic. Even before the transfer occurred, she understood the importance of the split in his lifeline. She saw the danger that lies ahead. Moreover, every member of the coven touched Billy's life in some way. Lilia was present at the Bar Mitzvah offering palm readings. Alice was the cop responding after the car accident. Jen appeared in a commercial before a video about witches Billy was researching. These connections are noticeable. The truth has been close all along. Billy chose to play along with this new family. He didn't want his new parents to fear they had lost their son. Billy isn't William though. That's the person he grows accustomed to speaking as though. Once he falls in love with Eddie, he decides to be vulnerable and share the truth. It's not until he meets Agatha that he declares who he truly is. Both names are covered by the sigil. Those personal details are withheld from others. Billy doesn't realize the extent of that deception. The sigil is broken now. Plus, he has to reckon with the reality that he has just killed for the first time.

The journey requires more than Billy declaring his name with pride. He comes from a powerful lineage. The infamy of his parents is well known. Wanda is dead. Vision is assumed to be in pieces. Billy has the responsibility to step into that legacy. He hears people's thoughts. It occurs during heightened moments of emotion. Billy has no training. He doesn't know how to control his powers. He conducts research to better understand the Hex. He uncovers the existence of witches. The internet even has well-resourced information about their stories throughout the centuries. Agatha is infamous there. Billy knows exactly where to find her. He believes she is harmless. Ralph Bohner is completely terrified. He is willing to share what he knows for the right price. Billy knows how to probe him. He went into that meeting not knowing who Agatha Harkness was. He leaves with a sense of direction and purpose. He realizes he is Wanda's son too. Everything suddenly falls into place. He knows what has been missing. It's more than confidence in his own identity. It's actually the presence of his brother. Tommy survived. Billy just has to find him. The Witches' Road offered a convenient way to accomplish that.

The Road has shaped Billy too. It has revealed what he is capable of. He was accepted as a member of the coven. And then, Alice died. Agatha absorbed her power. Billy could no longer continue his deceit. He stopped being a fan of Agatha. He had so much empathy for her. He questioned whether anyone in this coven knew about the sigil. Agatha even suggests she always knew her new familiar was Wanda's son. It was in the way they carried themselves. Of course, the viewer knows she saw the potential of Teen being her own son. Nicholas Scratch is seemingly forever lost in the dark deal she made to obtain the Darkhold. She has lost everything now. She wanted the potential to regain some of what was lost. Instead, she's greeted by more obstacles created by Wanda. She continues to plague her life even in death. Once Billy's identity is known, it's easy for Agatha to figure out what he wants from this journey. He is willing to travel with her again because his power is inconsistent. He hardens himself after killing Jen and Lilia. Now, the mud isn't as perilous as it was previously perceived. If Agatha could pull herself back onto the Road, it could be sensible for the other two to do so as well. That doesn't occur. Instead, the narrative offers an examination of the one mysterious member of the team. With the truth exposed, everyone has conflicting agendas over the meaning of this mission. That may ensure not all of them survive. It offers a compelling reason to continue. It's a story of found family. It's also a tale of power and stepping into the roles that can wield it so marvelously in this universe.
