"Missing While Bait" was written by Nkechi Okoro Carroll and directed by Nikhil Paniz
Sir promised to kill Lacey if he ever escaped Gabi's prison. He ultimately doesn't follow through on that pledge. It's not for a lack of trying though. In fact, he targets every member of Mosely & Associates. Most of them refuse to answer the phone when she calls. They remain angry at her for this secret. It's completely out in the open now. Everyone knows Gabi kept Sir in her basement for months. That creates a lot of dramatic tension. People feel they can no longer trust her. The team is only kept together because of the search for Lacey. Gabi blames herself for everything that has happened. Lacey was taken and Zeke was poisoned. The doctor didn't even know if Zeke would wake up again. He does. It's more traumatic for him to be in the hospital. Once he's safely returned home, he immediately becomes a reliable member of the team again. He proves how Lacey fought to stay alive. She relied on more than locks on the door to keep her safe from Sir. And yet, she's still tied to a chair by the conclusion of the premiere. Gabi is given 72 hours before Trent will arrest her. Time is running out. This is a dramatic way to start the season. One that aspires to hold Gabi accountable for her actions.

Gabi and Lacey were both kidnapped by Sir when they were children. However, their experiences were vastly different. Gabi was groomed by her English teacher. She visited his personal library. He refused to ever let her leave. She was held captive for over a year. Meanwhile, Sir took Lacey in a spur-of-the-moment decision. He thought her addition to the family would make Gabi feel less alone. It actually gave her the energy to fight back and escape to freedom. The ordeal was still just as traumatizing for Lacey. It's even creepier knowing Sir was watching her outside her bedroom window a month after she returned home. During that time, she couldn't speak. Her mother tried her best to comfort her. She never felt safe. Gabi was the only other person who understood what it was like. They were bonded for life because of the decisions Sir made. That continues to be their story two decades later. Lacey is alive because she fought back. Sir keeps her that way because it keeps Gabi engaged. He loves being in control. He was deprived of that in the first season. Now, he gets to exert it over Gabi and Lacey all over again.
Trent and Margaret suddenly see Gabi as no better than Sir. She deprived another human being of their basic dignity and freedom. That cannot be justified no matter how heinous Sir has been. He has loomed large over Gabi's life for a long time. Something snapped in her after her father's death. Dhan tracked Sir down. He accomplished what the police failed to do. That gave Gabi the opportunity to enact her own justice. Dhan was fine believing his savior was also a killer. He didn't judge her for crossing that line. He was shocked to discover the truth. He had his own private moment with Gabi before she confessed to everyone else at the firm. Margaret noticed Dhan wasn't as surprised as the rest of the team. She still answered when he called. He saved her from being poisoned too. Moreover, she shares with Zeke's father that people shouldn't be judged for the worst things they've done. That opens a path for her too to forgive Gabi. It doesn't occur here. She remains angry. Every new detail fills her with more contempt. She no longer knows the person who pulled her out of her own darkness. Margaret feels safe at the bus station. It's a public setting where it would be too dangerous for Sir to take action against her. This team has their comforts. They rely on them now more than ever before. Gabi needs the forgiveness of knowing Sir is the ultimate monster in this situation. She receives it from Lacey's mother.
Family cares for their loved ones. They have to know when their support is necessary. Lacey's mother comforts her daughter every night after returning home. That isn't enough. She needs Gabi to offer better communicate and support. That gives Lacey the confidence to engage in life once more. That connection remains true to the present. Gabi sees the message Lacey left behind confirming her survival. It's a clue to their shared past. Meanwhile, Sir gives her a way to contact him. A public phone becomes a crucial plot point. Gabi solves it because she has total access to the book he left behind. That's a huge oversight by the police. They essentially surrender all investigative steps to Gabi and her team. Yes, they are personally motivated in this case. They all care about Lacey. However, Trent and Shaker are meant to be seen as competent and reliable too. Trent knows how foolish he was in getting close to Gabi. She kept so much from him at his most vulnerable moments. He has a duty to arrest her. That looms on the horizon. Gabi accepts that punishment. She wants time to save Lacey. That's the priority. Consequences haven't quite caught up to Gabi just yet. They are present though. That intensity is deeply felt. She also feels the pressure of solving this herself. It's her against the monster who took her. He's free and she's the only person who understands his psychology. That's a lot of pressure to put on her. It's also not the best strategy in persuading the rest of the team to empathize with Gabi and agree to continue the basic premise of the show alongside her. Everything is at risk of falling apart. That's tense. It makes the viewer intrigued to see how the creative team can hold it all together without losing sight of the repercussions that are necessary following the big reveal.
