NBC's Found - Episode 2.03 "Missing While Lonely"

Betty Conley, an elderly widower engaged to a convicted murderer, disappears on the day of her wedding. Gabi baits Sir with a game of cat and mouse involving the case and navigates the fallout within her M&A family.

"Missing While Lonely" was written by Cameron Johnson and directed by Michael Schultz

Sir is on the verge of becoming almost superhuman with the amount of times he has escaped. He's always been presented as a crafty criminal. He is charismatic enough to earn the trust of so many people. He knows how to sneak around without being detected. However, each episode of the second season so far has seen him almost getting caught before he successfully makes his escape. The team is intensely focused on finding Lacey. They want to rescue her before she is killed. Sir may no longer need her as leverage to keep his connection with Gabi going. Gabi knows he will reach out if she teases him with the cases she takes on. In fact, that's the overwhelming reason why she decides to look for Betty. She sees the parallels between Betty's love story and the twisted way Sir looks at love. Sir has a fundamental misunderstanding of romance. He has built up an epic story shared between him and Gabi. He knows everything will be great once Gabi leaves with him voluntarily. That was his only mistake in the past. Gabi had no choice in staying with him. He wants her to make that decision now. She is willing to do so to spare her friends from the darkness she has inflicted on them.

Sir is a killer. Everyone knows he is capable of taking that ultimate action should he want to. It started when he was young. He killed his mother and covered it up with a fire. That case is only being examined again because he's involved in a high-profile case. The police didn't uncover this new evidence when Gabi was taken twenty years ago. Instead, fresh eyes now offer a new perspective. Sir was given his freedom to roam for a long time. It's creepy and insane every time he invades Lacey's life after she escaped. Her family believes she is getting better with each passing day. And yet, she's still terrified Sir will return. She hides a knife under her bed despite that being a hazard for her cousin. Sir keeps showing up because that's the way he maintains his connection with Gabi. He sees the bond they share. Moreover, Gabi is no longer easily accessible to him. Bella's presence is known. She only disappears from his radar after changing her name. Gabi and Lacey are interchangeable in this abuse. They share the trauma. Gabi wants to spare her sister the burden of taking an action she will regret. Gabi knows that pain all too well.

Gabi acted recklessly in her grief. Her father died and she blamed Sir for changing their dynamic forever. She lost valuable time and experiences with him. She loved him. And now, that bond has disappeared once more. She will never get it back. She had the luxury of returning to him in the past. He was never the same. Sir was responsible for that. Gabi has tried to improve the lives of so many people. She knows what they are going through after being taken against their will. She still struggles. She knows Sir incredibly well. She is just as capable at getting inside his head. She notices when he acts strangely. She sees the clues others miss. Margaret's vision is back. It's still hampered when around Gabi. Moreover, she doesn't have the same history as Gabi with this case. Only Gabi sees the message delivered in the books Sir picked up. She knows his location. She surrenders herself. She makes that sacrifice. It isn't enough. She still provides support for Lacey. She returns to them. Sir remains at large. He looms over this world. The urgency of the moment has passed. That leaves plenty of unresolved and complicated emotions though.

Plenty of people have motivation for potentially harming Betty. She fell in love with a convicted killer. Gabi looks at the situation differently. She sees the humanity behind the felon. He acted impulsively after a tragedy. Gabi understands that impulse. She has yet to be punished for what she did. Time is running out for her. Trent is willing to arrest her. He doesn't know if Gabi will ultimately follow through on her promise. He needs her help with this case. That means engaging with Sir once more. He has the power to deliver a message loud enough for everyone to witness. He also has a habit of disappearing into the shadows. He's always present. He is always hidden too. Again, it makes him seem indestructible. That results in plenty of danger over the heads of the main characters. Gabi won't rest until Sir is arrested and held accountable for his crimes. Her secret is out in the open. Sir is as well. Their fates are forever linked. People can't ignore that. They have to accept it. Gabi does so. She removes her desires from the situation. She just wants to do what's in the best interests of her team. She deceives them in order to protect them. It's not enough. Everyone is reunited. Sir is wounded. Lacey gets in another blow. He still roams believing he knows what's best for Gabi. He doesn't have the authority to make that decision. Him trying to do so inflicts pain. Betty understands that plight. Gabi helps her. That family is reunited too. The plot needs new ways to energize the storytelling. This opening arc was solid with the resolution of Lacey's rescue here. Now, a new era must emerge to keep that unpredictability engaging.
