Netflix Cancels 'The Sandman' After Two Seasons

Netflix has today confirmed that its original drama series The Sandman will end with its upcoming second season. Production on the final episodes completed last summer for a premiere later this year.

"The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season," said showrunner Allan Heinberg in a statement. "We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics' loyal readers as well as fans of our show."

The second season follows the "Season of Mists" storyline from Neil Gaiman's comics, in which Lucifer abdicates control of Hell and presents Morpheus, aka Dream, with the key to its gates, causing many immortals to try to convince Morpheus to give the key to them.

Returning cast members include Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Kirby as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Ferdinand Kingsley as Hob Gadling, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker, and Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall.

New cast additions for Season 2 include Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, Barry Sloane as The Prodigal, Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus, Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, Laurence O'Fuarain as Thor, Ann Skelly as Nuala, Douglas Booth as Cluracan, Jack Gleeson as Puck, Indya Moore as Wanda, and Steve Coogan as Barnabas the dog.

Heinberg and Gaiman co-developed the drama with David S. Goyer based on the DC comics of the same name by Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg. All episodes of Seaosn 2 were directed by Jamie Childs. Warner Bros. Television produces in association with Netflix.

The cancellation comes after multiple sexual misconduct accusations were reported against Gaiman. As a result, he was dropped from the upcoming final season of Prime Video's Good Omens and development was paused on the film adaptation of The Graveyard Book at Disney. Gaiman was also dropped by his longtime comic book publisher Dark Horse.
