REVIEW: 'Matlock' - Matty Sees a New Side of Sarah But Betrays Her Trust to Keep Her Secret in 'Crash Helmets On'

CBS' Matlock - Episode 1.10 "Crash Helmets On"

Matty and Sarah pose as grandmother and granddaughter in order to gather information at a senior living facility facing a wrongful death suit.

"Crash Helmets On" was written by Lizzie Perrin & Nicki Renna and directed by Jennifer Lynch

Relationships at Jacobson Moore grow more complicated the longer Matty stays undercover. She decided to rule Olympia out as a suspect because she has befriended her. She trusts her instincts. Those have typically steered her in the right direction so far. Edwin is cautious about the move. However, he too is getting in on the deceit. Matty's time at the firm has entirely been about manipulation. She needs to get answers. The truth may not bring her daughter back to life. She feels a responsibility to honor her memory. This can help the entire family move forward. And yet, Matty has formed genuine connections at the firm. The foundation is a lie. And so, nothing that has happened after that can truly be trusted. Matty went in with a mission. Her actions are dictated by keeping her secrets no matter what. That means she has no good excuse for kicking Sarah off a case. Billy was more than capable of handing it. That was still a destructive action. One where Matty has just created a new enemy. Sarah allowed herself to show vulnerability. That was endearing. Matty saw her advice being fulfilled. She couldn't be proud and confident in her decision. Instead, everything fell apart because the pen was discovered.

Even though she trusts Olympia, Matty still manipulates her into a contentious battle with Julian over their divorce. It's all about convincing her that a forensic audit is necessary to uncover any lies he has had. It's based on the premise of some financial decisions Matty can't immediately explain. She doesn't even know if they are connected to the Wellbrexa case. Every opportunity Julian has ever had may have truly been delivered by his father. Nepotism can explain a lot. And yet, Senior has openly stated his preference for Olympia. He appreciates her work ethic and the results she delivers to the firm. Of course, her cases are different from the bulk of the clients the firm represents. In this episode though, she's tasked with defending a retirement community being sued for neglect in a recent death. She's the face defending a company against the loved ones searching for answers. The lawyers have to exhume the dead man's body in order to get clues about any contributing factors to his passing. Matty's initial theory about viagra didn't pan out. She was still right about something happening that triggered his death.

The family didn't want to see things clearly. They needed to believe their father and grandfather was happy in this community and was fighting to return to full strength. In reality, he was ready to die. He reached the end of his life. He took the decision in his own hands. He was held by the woman he loved. It was a sweet and moving ending to a life well lived. He didn't want to be a burden. He was willing to face reality after his fall. Rehabilitation on his hip could only do so much. The nurses weren't negligent by not checking on him regularly while he was sick. That just creates a convenient narrative. One that has someone to blame. It requires true accountability to face the truth. Olympia exposes it in open court. It's an act of love. It's also purely about being a fierce advocate for her client. She stole this case from Julian. They are eager to prove their worth to the partners. They are in open conflict now. They have to do whatever it takes to maintain their standing at this firm. Olympia trusts Matty completely. When she needs support, Matty is the one who gives it. When she has news to share, Matty receives the call. Olympia is willing to share everything. A lot of Matty's personal experience informs how she behaves with Olympia. She is still lying to her. She manipulates the situation to benefit her narrative regardless of the truth. So many are hit in the crossfire.

Matty worries about the future. She wants to protect Alfie for as long as possible. She understands she won't be around forever. He may need more family than what she and Edwin can provide. They are open to finding his birth father. That's a process they can start. She fears the pain of aging. Sarah experienced dementia firsthand. Her relationship with her grandmother changed once she no longer recognized her. Seeing that side of her allowed Matty to feel confident in her fellow associate representing Autry as he faced eviction. Billy also wanted the responsibility. He angles for a new direction in life following his breakup. He needs that boost of confidence. Matty only changes her mind once Billy catches her snooping around. He buys her story. He's grateful for the opportunity. He delivers too. Autry gets to stay in his apartment. Nothing has to change. Sarah experiences how easy it is for Matty to betray someone. It happened in an instant. She isn't loyal to anyone at the firm. That can't be forgotten. And so, Sarah's guard is up once more. This time for good reason. She sees how Matty operates. It's pure gaslighting. Matty may believe she is convincing with her lies. Lives are being altered because of her actions. She has no progress to lift up either. This was all her doing in pursuit of something that may not even be real in the end.
